Some stocks tend to cycle up and down in a regular pattern when going sideways. So swing trading would be buying near the bottom at that range and selling near the top of that range. This allows you to make money from the stock even if the average price is going nowhere. But you have to be careful about earnings and other news, because it could just be consolidating, for a big move up or down.
